Radio Frequency Surveys

At C-INTECH, we conduct engineering-led radio frequency surveys to measure, analyze, and map radio frequency (RF) conditions within buildings, campuses, and infrastructure sites. We identify interference sources, assess exposure against applicable criteria, and provide the technical data required to improve wireless performance or plan mitigation.

Why RF Surveys Matter

Modern facilities contain overlapping RF sources from wireless networks, antennas, communication systems, building controls, and electronic equipment. An RF survey identifies the source, frequency, and signal path before mitigation begins, reducing the risk of unresolved interference, unnecessary equipment changes, or avoidable shielding costs.

Detect Hidden RF Sources

Identify intermittent transmitters, unwanted emissions, leakage, harmonics, and broadband noise that may not be visible during routine inspections.

Assess RF Exposure Levels

Compare measured RF conditions with the exposure criteria applicable to the project’s jurisdiction, frequency range, and occupancy type.

Improve Wireless System Reliability

Identify competing signals, coverage variations, channel congestion, and other RF conditions that may reduce communication performance.

Prevent Signal Degradation

Establish measured evidence before replacing equipment, changing antenna layouts, adding shielding, or modifying wireless infrastructure.

What Is an RF Survey?

An RF survey uses calibrated instruments to measure the strength, frequency, distribution, and variation of radio frequency energy within a defined area. C-INTECH distinguishes RF surveys from low-frequency electromagnetic field (EMF) surveys: EMF surveys assess power-frequency magnetic fields from electrical infrastructure, while radio frequency surveys focus on higher-frequency signals from antennas, wireless systems, transmitters, and electronic equipment.

A radio frequency propagation survey may also be used to assess how intended signals distribute through a building, including areas affected by structural materials, equipment, reflections, or competing transmitters.

Types of RF Surveys We Perform

The required survey type depends on whether the project involves interference, exposure assessment, system deployment, or baseline documentation.

Our RF Survey Process

Each survey follows a defined engineering process based on the site, suspected sources, affected systems, and reporting requirements.

1. Project Scoping and RF Risk Definition

We review the reported symptoms, affected equipment, known transmitters, operating schedules, site occupancy, and required assessment criteria. The project scope identifies whether the primary concern is interference, RF exposure, system instability, deployment planning, or an unknown RF source.

2. Site Inspection and Environment Mapping

Our team reviews the building layout, equipment locations, antenna positions, communication systems, service penetrations, and nearby external sources. Measurement points are selected based on equipment sensitivity, accessible areas, observed symptoms, and expected RF behaviour.

3. RF Measurement and Spectrum Scanning

Measurements are collected using calibrated spectrum analyzers, RF field meters, isotropic probes, antennas, and data-logging equipment appropriate to the survey range. Where possible, readings are taken under different equipment states or operating conditions to distinguish background RF from process-related emissions.

4. Data Analysis and Signal Classification

Collected data is reviewed to separate intended RF transmissions from broadband noise, harmonics, spurious emissions, intermittent signals, and other potential interference sources. When a signal is intermittent, longer-term monitoring or additional testing may be required before its source can be confirmed.

5. Compliance Evaluation

Where exposure assessment is included, measured values are compared with the applicable criteria for the jurisdiction, frequency range, source type, and occupancy conditions. References may include:

6. Reporting and Engineering Recommendations

C-INTECH prepares a technical report documenting the measurement approach, site conditions, results, identified signals, and engineering interpretation. Recommendations may include:

  • RF source identification
  • Signal-strength heat maps
  • Equipment or antenna changes
  • Frequency or channel coordination
  • Separation and relocation measures
  • Filtering or cable treatment
  • RF shielding strategies
  • Additional monitoring or verification

Research and EMC Testing Laboratories

Document background RF levels and identify emissions that may affect sensitive instruments, measurements, experiments, or controlled test environments.

RF Standards and Compliance Frameworks

RF exposure criteria and measurement methods depend on the project jurisdiction, source type, frequency range, occupancy, and purpose of the assessment. Our team at C-INTECH identifies the applicable references during project scoping rather than applying every standard to every survey.

  • Health Canada Safety Code 6: Provides recommended limits for human exposure to RF electromagnetic energy from 3 kHz to 300 GHz in Canada.
  • ICNIRP RF Exposure Guidelines: Provide exposure restrictions and reference levels for RF electromagnetic fields from 100 kHz to 300 GHz.
  • IEEE C95.1: Provides safety levels for human exposure to electric, magnetic, and electromagnetic fields across the frequency range from 0 Hz to 300 GHz.
  • FCC OET Bulletin 65: Guides evaluating RF exposure compliance for facilities, operations, and devices subject to FCC requirements in the United States.
  • IEC 62232: Provides methods for determining RF field strength, power density, and specific absorption rate near radiocommunication base stations.

Technical Assessment Focus

  • Maximum Permissible Exposure comparison
  • Power-density mapping
  • Electric and magnetic field evaluation
  • Frequency-specific exposure interpretation

Measurement results are interpreted according to the limits, averaging periods, spatial requirements, and occupancy classifications defined by the applicable reference.

What You Receive

Survey deliverables are defined during scoping so the report supports the project’s technical, operational, or documentation requirements.

  • Full RF Survey Report: Survey scope, instruments, measurement locations, site conditions, spectrum data, field-strength results, and engineering interpretation.
  • RF Interference Source Map: Mapped locations of confirmed or suspected RF sources affecting the surveyed environment.
  • Signal-Strength Heat Maps: Visual representation of measured RF levels across selected rooms, floors, equipment areas, or outdoor locations.
  • Exposure Compliance Assessment: Comparison of measured conditions with the exposure criteria applicable to the project.
  • Time-Based RF Variation Logs: Recorded signal changes used to assess intermittent emissions, operational cycles, or changing RF conditions.
  • Engineering Mitigation Recommendations: Practical measures based on the identified frequency, source, signal path, equipment sensitivity, and facility constraints.
  • Optional RF Shielding or EMC Improvement Proposal: A defined mitigation concept where measurements confirm that shielding, filtering, relocation, or system redesign should be considered.
